Here are a few simple DO's and DON'T tips that will help keep your bowl appealing and resilient for years to come.
DO: Care for Bowls with a Glossy or Hard Finish Care for Bowls with a Natural or Oil Finish
DON'T: - Don't - Expose to direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
Like most every other object, the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays can damage your bowl by drying it out excessively. Many woods will also fade or darken with exposure as well. Typically reddish colored areas darken or become brown. Certainly use them at a picnic or in a sunny place, but when not needed please display them away from direct sunlight. - Don't - Place in the dishwasher.
Although the bowl won't melt away... the high heat, harsh soaps and prolonged contact with hot water from dishwashers can harm the finish on a bowl and possibly migrate into the grain where excessive moisture may promote cracking. It's best to avoid soaking the bowl in water as well. - Don't - Use to serve Hot or Cold "standing" liquids.
Of course it's OK to serve wet things like salads in the bowls - but it's best to avoid hot liquids or to leave liquids in the bowl for a long period. A couple hours or more is fine. Enjoy dinner! But please don't use it to serve hot soup or as a punch bowl unless you know the bowl was made to do this.
